José Manuel va estudiar Estadística de la Universitat, però és més conegut a Catalunya com el "Super López dels Escacs", un sobrenom que se li va enganxar el 1997 al Campionat d'Espanya Juvenil, on va quedar 3r després de vèncer a Paco Vallejo, el millor espanyol natiu, a la ronda final. Ha estat Campió de Catalunya i Subcampió d'Espanya.
Tanmateix, ser un jugador destacat i en progressió, no treu que segueixi desenvolupant les seves activitats d'executiu, havent guanyat les oposicions no fa molt de temps.

Grandmaster José Manuel López is one of the strongest professional chessplayer of Catalonia, with great perspectives in both chess and a second profession he has also chosen for living.
He studied Statistics at the University, but he is better known to the Catalan Society as the “Super López of Chess”, a nickname which he earned back in 1997 at Spanish Junior Championships, where he came 3rd beating the top Spanish born GM Paco Vallejo in the final round. He was the Catalonian Champion and Vice – Champion of Spain.
Nowadays he successfully manages not to fail practicing these his two passions and professions.
